I use this for web based video conferencing that is quite susceptible to echo however, this device works flawlessly. Superb quality and audio pickup. Use it on my Vista desktop and XP laptop - interestingly when used on the latter it acts as the PC loudspeaker and is much clearer and louder than the standard stereo laptop speakers. Cord as useful is long - it would be nice if a second cord about 6" long was included - a common personal gripe with devices that are attached to my laptop.

Imagine an office without a desk, or lights, a computer, or even something as simple as a chair. When the architects and designers started planning a building or office space they knew they would have to make concessions for these items during each of the building activities. As marketers, we take part in many activities, much like a builder or designer does.

Of these activities, there is one that precludes each of these; the annual planning and budgeting process. One part of planning often gets left out though, measuring the effectiveness of the activities we plan. Yet plans without metrics are like offices without chairs, conference rooms without tables, or buildings without a foundation. Parts of each exist, but there is a major component missing.

Recently surveys have concluded that 55% of business to business marketing executives face the challenge of measuring marketing's effectiveness. A recent survey conducted by Unica made this statement: "However, survey respondents also said they faced numerous challenges, chief among them measuring marketing effectiveness, which was cited by 55% of respondents." It was also stated that many executives don't believe marketing is measurable. And 63% of them don't consider marketing to be measurable. So it should be no surprise to learn that as many as 57% of marketing plans overlook metrics and that plans are more about counting activities rather than measuring the impact on business outcomes as was determined the fifth Business Readiness Survey conducted by VisionEdge Marketing.

Can we measure marketing's effectiveness? Does it really make a difference?

It certainly does for many companies. One company in particular, VCON, found incorporating a metrics framework into their planning process to be extremely valuable. The marketing team realized that securing a larger marketing budget would require taking a more metrics-related approach as a means to demonstrate the marketing organization's contribution to the company. So when they realized the need for a metrics-based approach, they hired VisionEdge Marketing to help them develop the right set of metrics. VCON turned to an outside resource to help create a framework for their plan. They chose VisionEdge Marketing because the company's metrics expertise and a model ties marketing metrics to the goals of the company.

Laura Shay, VCON's Global Product Marketing Manager, wanted an approach that went beyond tracking results from a variety of marketing activities, such as metrics associated with web site visits, click-throughs, and participants at a webinar. Rather she wanted a way to connect the marketing initiatives to the company's market share, partner development, and up-sell objectives. "We had a good idea of the adoption process for our technology and we were monitoring dozens of activities and outcomes. What we didn't know was whether these were the right things to be monitoring and how to tie activity tracking to the success of our marketing objectives and strategies," added Laura.

VCON's limited marketing resources were overwhelmed with the number of things that were possible to track. The challenge was getting the team out of the weeds of tracking various marcom activities and more focused on identifying metrics that would really indicate whether the marketing initiatives were moving the needle for the business.

Prior to the metrics development and framework session, VisionEdge Marketing examined the metrics currently being used by the company and the company's business objectives for the coming year. "This preparatory stage was very helpful," commented Laura. "It enabled us to start thinking about tying our marketing initiatives to very specific business outcomes such as market share, order value, and repeat business." The business goals were used as a framework for the plan. By understanding the specific business outcomes, the session could focus on where marketing could make an impact and how to measure this impact. Within a half day or so the marketing department was able to develop a manageable set of metrics. A key part of the process was to clarify what outcomes have real impact on the business.

The metrics focused on two primary areas: The channel's role in VCON's success, and a goal of achieving 25% quarter-to-quarter growth from new products across all sales regions. Three metrics were selected: revenue/partner, qualified leads/region, and new products sold vs. previous product sold. Key indicators were defined for each of these and appropriate objectives and strategies were then incorporated into the annual plan. A side benefit was that the planning session was far more productive. "We didn't get bogged down in discussing the nuances of each region and why tracking certain activities would or wouldn't work. We could keep our eye on the larger picture and each region could address its individual differences," added Laura.

The process enabled the VCON team to achieve two important outcomes:

1. A set of key metrics that crossed markets and regions

2. A plan and budget the management team could evaluate based on business outcomes

Of course the best outcome was the team was able to deliver a plan and a budget request the management team could relate to. "We were more successful in securing faster approval and a better budget, because the plan very clearly connected the dots between marcom activities and business outcomes," said Laura.

VCON has learned the importance of a complete marketing plan and have already reaped the benefits by securing a higher marketing budget. They have learned the importance and ability of metrics to measure the effectiveness of marketing to show how their efforts impact business goals.

As the meeting began, the project manager of the buying committee told me that the key decision-maker would miss the first 20 minutes or so of my presentation. This was a very competitive sale that I was working on at the time. There were about a dozen or so business-people from the prospect company that I was selling to in this meeting. The presentation was scheduled to last about 90 minutes. During the first 20 minutes I had planned to cover my "persuasive arguments" (that is my company and product benefits).
So how do you think that I felt about this wonderful news?
The fact that this decision-maker felt it to be an efficient use of his time to avoid the beginning of the sales presentation speaks volumes about the reputation of salespeople and our sales presentations. He judged that, he had better things to do than sit through a PowerPoint presentation about how many years we had been in business, how we were so customer focused, and how we were absolutely the best choice for their business. He chose instead to attend only the product demonstration part of the presentation.
The advent of presentation software like Powerpoint has allowed many people to assemble information for presentation very quickly. Unfortunately it also reinforces the all too common sales style of delivering features and benefits in the effort to persuade. Most buyers are too nice to tell us that they are bored with this approach. And so on it goes.
Engage your audience by telling stories. Begin the story even before doing introductions, agenda review, etc. Use this to get their attention and take full control. What kind of story should you tell? The best stories are ones that the prospect can relate to. How? Tell a story about one of your customers who had a big problem and how they solved it by doing business with you. Make the story engaging by describing it in vivid emotional detail - who was affected by the problem, how was it impacting them, and how did they feel, and how did the solution change all of this?
Take your feature benefit points and weave them into the story. They will have 10 times the impact and will be remembered when delivered this way. You can even say to your audience for emphasis "you might want to write that down". And what should you do with those PowerPoint slides that someone in marketing spent hours developing? Print them out as a handout, and give it to your audience at the end of your presentation.
Dont' stop with just one story. Create multiple stories for an interesting and persuasive presentation that will generate discussion about the customer's business problems and how you can solve them.
As for that decision-maker who blows off the first part of your meeting? All objections, stalls, and problems should be handled in advance. If you haven't yet secured access to the decision-maker, give your sponsor an agenda with the first items being "Customer Successes", followed by "Live Product Demonstration". Save the "Company Overview" for the end. No one cares that you have 735 employees until you have proven that you can help solve their business problems.

The concept of an online conference (also known as videoconference, video conference, videoteleconference, video teleconference, web conference, audio conference) is not at all new. This technology was introduced in the 1970s and became digital in the 1980s. IP or Internet Protocol in the mid 1990s made video conferencing more accessible to the world.

What Has Matching Got To Do With Presenting?

The secret to presenting to a potential client is "matching." Prior to presenting, you would have asked plenty of questions and uncovered the problems they want solved. The next step then is to present your solution and to do lots of matching.

What do I mean by matching? Matching is where you make the connection between the problems a potential client wants solved and the features/characteristics of your service that solves those problems.

Your solution has lots of features/characteristics and some are relevant to the potential client and some are not. You want to sort all your features and characteristics into two piles. Pile one consists of the features/characteristics they care about - as they solve the specific problems they have discussed with you. Pile two consists of the features/characteristics they will not care about - as they don't solve any of the problems they have discussed with you. Note that you can only do this sorting if you've asked enough questions before you present.

To prepare for your presentation, look at all the features/characteristics your potential client cares about (pile one). The next step is to then "match" each of the problems they want solved to the feature/characteristic of your service that will solve it for them. When you present, you then show the connection between the problems they have agreed they want solved and the features/characteristics of your service that solves those problems.

If you do not do the matching for your potential client, they will be left trying to work out what aspect (features/characteristic) of your service can solve their problems. Also if you do not do the matching, your potential client will feel you haven't listened to them, amongst other things.

To explain this further, I am going to use a simple example of buying a car. Even though I do not like stereotype car salesmen, this is a good example for matching, plus it is an example you can probably relate to.

Scenario One

The car salesman asks you what sort of car you're looking for and what is important to you. You tell him. He then shows you a car and proceeds to tell you all about the features of the car that you frankly could not care less about. He just goes on and on telling you absolutely everything about the car. Sound familiar?

Scenario Two

The car salesman asks you what sort of car you are looking for and what is important to you. You tell him. He then shows you a car and describes exactly what features of the car will give you each of the things you said are important to you.

Who would you buy the car from? Would you buy from the car salesman in scenario one or scenario two? Who did matching?

What would you be thinking with the scenario-one car salesman?

You might be thinking:

- He didn't listen to me.

- He doesn't understand me.

- Why did he ask me what I wanted as he clearly wasn't interested?

- I am not sure if it meets my needs. I am confused.

- I am bored and irritated.

- How can I get away from this person?

What would you be thinking with the scenario-two car salesman?

You might be thinking:

- He really listened to me.

- He understands me.

- I can clearly see how this meets my needs.

- I am interested.

When you present your solution, demonstrate that you have been listening and that you understand their problems. Only present the features/characteristics that solve the specific problems they have been telling you about. That is what they're interested in and what they will care about. The key to presenting is in the matching!

Convert Your Audio So It Will Stream On The Internet

One of the most often asked questions I get is how do I get my audio file to play on the Internet without stopping and stuttering. There is a fine line when you are dealing with streaming audio. You have to balance file size with quality. The higher the quality of your audio file the larger the file size is.

Here are some general guidelines on what quality settings to use for different situations. The following settings are a good starting point for most situations.

Frequency 22,050 Hz

Bit rate 16 kps -32kps

Mono for voice and stereo for music

You have two choices to make when converting your wav audio file to mp3. The first choice is frequency and the second is called bit-rate. Most of the time music quality will have the Frequency set at 128 Hz but for voice recordings you can go much lower.

If you want to please the dial up users I would start at the lowest setting listed above and see what it sounds like. If you are not happy with the sound bump it up to 24kps. If you are still not happy go up to 32 kps. Remember the higher you go with your settings the bigger the file will be therefore the harder it will be to stream over a dialup connection. With more people using broadband this will become less of a problem.

You may need to play with your settings for a little while but you will find once you know what the best setting is for your audio files you will not have to vary those settings very often.

Convert Your Mp3 to A Streaming Format

The last step you need to take in getting your audio ready to put on the Internet is to convert it into the flash format called swf. Swf stands for shock wave file and is the very best format we have now for streaming your audio. When the flash 6 player came out with its ability to stream audio everything came together.

You will need a conversion program such as Web Audio Plus, Sonic Memo or Mp3 Sound stream. Any of these programs make it super easy to convert your mp3 into a streaming file. All the programs I have tried have step-by-step wizards and you literally have your file converted in a couple of minutes. The software will produce the code you need for your web page. All you have to do is copy the code the program produces, paste the code into your web page, upload the swf file and your website will talk or sing.

In a sense the network is just like a radio station. A radio station broadcasts commercials through the speakers of a radio to people in their local area. This company broadcasts commercials to people in any local area (or nationwide or worldwide) through computer speakers.

For example, as a real estate agent, you could broadcast your message to 500 people per day in the North Palm Beach, FL area at a certain time on certain days. Or a restaurant owner from The City of London, England could advertise today's lunch time menu to people that live in The City, between 10 o'clock and midday.

The company has grown enough to gain the attention of candidates running for President of the United States (among many other political campaigns), and political ads are scheduled run on participating websites across the Internet.

These short advertisements, known as "Adlets", are now available to listeners over 30 million times a day on websites large and small, worldwide. Participating websites are scattered across the Internet giving advertisers a wide range of demographic exposure. When any Internet visitor hits one of their participating ad sponsored websites, the audio commercial starts playing instantly.

The Secret to Streaming MP3 Files That Even Dial-Up Users Can Hear

Some people look at audio on a web site as old-hat -- after all, isn't everybody doing video these days?

Sure, some people are doing video, but there are some problems with that approach that make audio a better choice in a lot of cases. For example, having a "bad hair day" doesn't matter when you're doing audio. For another thing, you don't have to worry about lighting, or what the background looks like when doing audio.

And finally, almost anyone can crank out an audio file in a few minutes that can be heard -- even on dial-up lines. And since a large percentage of internet users are still on dial-up, making sure they hear your message is important.

The fact that audio can increase sales and sign-ups isn't in dispute, but what I hear the most from people who are putting audio on their web sites is, "How can I create a sound file that even dial-up users can hear without lots of stops and starts?"

The stuttering that dial-up users are subjected to is a result of two factors. First, they're on a slow line and things just aren't going to come across as quickly. Second,audio files that are recorded at a high bit-rate require a high bandwidth connection. Either everyone needs DSL or better (yeah, right!) or you need to create an audio file that's much smaller in size.

So let's look at ways to do that. Note: there are about as many audio editing programs out there as stars in the sky, so the following won't be step-by-step instructions. But the info should get you close enough to make the right choices in the software you're using.

There are two options you're going to want to tweak. They're typically called "sample rate" and "bit rate." The sample rate numbers will usually be followed by the letters Hz or kHz and range from about 8000 (or 8 if the info is in kHz) to 44100 (or 44.1 kHz). Bit rate numbers are usually followed by the letters kbps and will typically range from 8 or 16 up to 196 or even higher. (If you see just two or three options, 8, 16, and possibly 32, that's not the
parameter we care about).

For CD quality audio you'd want a sample rate of 44,100 Hz but since voice can get by with so much less, set your sample rate to 11,025 Hz (or 11.025 kHz). And most people listening to music want their bit rate set to at least 128 kbps, but for voice work we can go much lower. And, if we want dial-up people to be happy, we have to go very low.

Try setting your bit rate to 16kbps and see if you're satisfied with the result. If not, try 32kbps and so on, up until you are happy. Just remember, every step you take up the ladder means more dial-up people won't have a smooth audio stream. Folks with faster dial-up connections should get 32kbps sound with little trouble -- but if the sound quality of a 16kbps file floats your boat, then go with that. Just about everyone should be happy in that case.

It might take an afternoon of tweaking with your audio software to get comfortable with it the first time, but after that you'll be able to crank out audio files as easily as you crank out word processor docs.

If you haven't made the move to using audio on your web site yet, go ahead and give it a shot. There are many great reasons to use it, and now that you know how to create audio
files that even dial-up users can experience, there are fewer reasons not to.

This was purchased for a home office where there was a need for a regular amount of conference calls. The home office is on the noisy side with a regular amount of activity in the background. Headsets, to me, are cumbersome and thus I finally decided to invest in the Polycom.

Setup is fairly easy...its like plugging in a regular land line telephone.

Using this model is also easy because it has the display that shows you what you are dialing, etc. There is a lower cost model available that does not have the display...but I highly recommend the extra cost because the display makes it all the much better.

When initially installed I ran about 5-10 tests with various people and at various times of the day due to the different amounts of background noise.

I can say that all tests said that they could hear me clearly and that it sounded just like a regular phone call. Polycom has some of the best noise canceling features in the business and those exact features are in this device. Most of these STAR conference phones are found in corporate environments...but this one is perfect for small office/home office use.

Keep in mind...Polycom is the sole manufacturer of devices like this...even if they are branded by other companies such as Cisco..etc.
